Fazaia Surgical Societyโ€™s Event on Surgical Specialities.

๐ŸŒŸโ€œSamosas with surgeonsโ€๐ŸŒŸ

FMC finally has its own society; and it began with samosas

โ€œSamosas with Surgeonsโ€ was the theme for the inaugural event held by the Fazaia Surgical society last Friday. It marks the start of something new; as FSS is the first society of FMC that was created by students, something which will undoubtedly be written in college folklore.

Students from all five batches met in lecture hall 3 to attend a presentation on surgery given by Dr Ashfaq (HOD surgery) and to eat some tasty samosas.

The event began as Dr Ashfaq introduced himself, inquired about the strength of each year present, and then began in earnest with a succinct summary of the aim of a surgeon โ€“ Providing service to ailing and dying patients to save lives. He explained how deciding to specialize in surgery or any other specialty is something which comes naturally when one is exposed to clinical practice and interaction with patients.

As for โ€œwhy anyone would specialize in surgery in particularโ€, his answer was very clear.

He described it as a โ€œrewarding, challenging and dynamicโ€ specialty. What makes surgery rewarding is the opportunity to save lives and cure patients, and it remains vibrant as new surgical methods, technological innovations and even medical understanding continues to evolve every passing year. And itโ€™s quite challenging as cutting open a human isnโ€™t a piece of cake! (Or rather, cutting a piece of cake)

โ€œA good surgeon must have an eagleโ€™s eye, a lionโ€™s heart, and a ladyโ€™s handโ€

Now that we have an answer to our โ€˜whyโ€™, he explained further on โ€˜howโ€™.  He described some of the sacrifices involved, as a surgeon must be dedicated, sincere with his work and willing to spend significant time with patients. Endure long hours, difficult surgeries, litigations, allegations, remain physically and mentally fit and be able to withstand quite some stress regularly.

It was quite interesting and eye opening to learn about some of the practical aspects of being a surgeon from a surgeon himself.

Dr Ashfaq frankly gave an insight to us on the life of a surgeon by describing his personal daily routine and that of some of his colleagues.

It was very informative as such things can only be learnt from someone who does it for a living. Indeed, he described many things that were previously unknown to me while at the same time his words motivated me to seriously consider surgery after MBBS.

He briefly described some further specialties and super specialties in surgery which all stem from general surgery, the mother specialty of surgery. Specializing in one of these specialties provides vast career pathways such as clinical practice, helping a community, providing surgical skills to fellow doctors, surgical research, or going into teaching (like Dr Ashfaq himself.)

After the lecture was over, an interactive question answer session was held in which the students could freely communicate with Dr Ashfaq and have their queries answered.  Some questions were written already while others were asked on the spot. It all led to a cozy and informal setting as the samosas were circulated at the same time.

All in all, it was a successful and fun first event, organized by the inexhaustible efforts of the FSS hierarchy. FSS events bring enlightenment to every such activity which can help a medical student build a rich and informative persona. It is a truly commendable initiative which creates a platform for us to learn more about what our future beholds. Such efforts will be remembered long after these founding members are gone.โœจโœจโœจ
